Ms Irene Ng meet Datu Ik Pahon at Seafood Dinner
A group of 69 key grass root leaders from Singapore recently visited Kuching for a retreat in the state.

Led by Ms Irene Ng Phek Hoong (Members of Parliament, Singapore), the group had been touring surrounding of Kuching including a visit to local a village’s Gahat Mawang in Serian on December 3. Here they have been intermingling with the villagers and local grass root leaders where they also have a dinner in the village involve the local community.

Their trip to Kuching from December 2 – 5, 2010 was coordinated by MMVC Network of Singapore.

Annually, Ms Irene Ng takes her key grassroots leaders overseas for a retreat. They serve the Tampines Changkat constituency. The main aims are to review the past year’s programmes for the community, to discuss the action plan for next year and to build closer bonds as a team of volunteers. At the same time, the overseas retreat gives the grassroots leaders an opportunity to understand the social and political challenges facing other communities in the different countries and to learn from their experiences.

In the previous years, Ms Ng brought her grassroots leaders to villages in Cambodia and Hainan, where they also met the local leaders. This year she decided to bring them to Sarawak as she had met former Tourism Minister of Sarawak, Dato Sri Michael Manyin when he visited Singapore
last year.

The Permanent Secretary from the Ministry of Tourism & Heritage Sarawak, Datu Ik Pahon Joyik were able to spend his time attending the farewell dinner hosted by Sarawak Tourism Board tonight for the group.

While in Kuching, the grassroots leaders’ team was brought on tour to Sarawak Cultural Village and also to oversee the wildlife rehabilitation in Matang Wildlife Centre. They were also brought to see the Sarawak pottery making and have a chance to go for shopping a local handicraft at the Main Bazaar.
